Lychee is an evergreen tree native to China that is now grown worldwide. It can reach a height of 60 feet and produces a rough-textured red fruit that contains the edible sweet portion inside. The tree requires a warm sub-tropical climate where the lowest temperatures should fall below 38 degrees. Lychees can be eaten fresh or canned and are common in Asian markets.
