The Papaya is native to Mexico and is grown in all sub-tropical climates. The tree can grow to 30 feet and looks a bit like a palm tree as the leaves and branches are confined to the top of the trunk. Papayas are used not only as an eating fruit but also for medicines and as a meat tenderizer. The main varieties are Mexican and Hawaiian each with its own sub-species.
