There are more than 140 varieties of plums, about 20 of which are the most common. Like its close relatives the peach and the nectarine, plums also come in clingstone and freestone varieties. Some plums are bred to retain their sweetness after drying and are used in the prune industry. Santa Rosa, Red Beauty, and Burgundy are some of the most popular varieties.
