Avocados originated in Mexico and have spread to all parts of the sub tropical world. A fuul grown tree can reach 70 feet and produce hundreds of pounds of fruit. There are quite a few varieties but only a handful are self-pollinating. The standard way to grow them is to have both an "A" variety and a "B" variety in proximity to ensure pollination. The tree need well-aerated soil that drains quickly. The fruit matures on the tree and ripens after it is picked, much like a banana.
